Black Bar Clock

This clock is a very belated wedding gift to one of Ryder’s cousins. We got a chance to see their new home and wanted to give them something that hopefully would fit in with their aesthetic. Ryder originally designed this clock as a pendulum clock – the pendulum would swing between the two vertical bars. We ran into trouble finding pendulums shorter than 16″, though, and since we had to ship this clock, we scaled it down to a more modest wall size – about 2 feet tall.

The face piece is a thin piece of wood, with the clock mechanism drilled through it. The vertical bars are 2″ square dowels. We cut slits into them with our handy-dandy scroll saw, and slid the face piece through the dowels. We glued it all in place, then painted it solid black.

Experimenting with a pendulum clock is still on my to-make list – maybe a larger version of this, maybe something else entirely!

Chicklets in a Tree

Chicklets in a tree

My brother’s girlfriend made oodles of these adorable knitted chicklets and stuffed our stockings with them. Ryder & I came home with several that have now taken up residence in a pottery dish. If I knew how to knit, I’d imagine these would be quick projects, and could be really cute tied on to a baby gift or as tiny Christmas ornaments (each is about 1″ in diameter).

Shades of blue

This shades of blue clock was a birthday gift for my mom. I’ve now made a clock for every member of my immediate family… I guess it’s time to think of a new theme for my gifts!

This one was fun to make – I started with a coat of blue paint, then marked out twelve wedges using tape. I started with one shade of blue, painted a wedge, then mixed in more white/cream/silver/green/etc to get a new shade and painted the next wedge. Mixing paint is always fun.

And my mom likes it, so I’m happy. Now I’m contemplating making one for myself, maybe in shades of grey. Not that I have any walls left that need clocks…

Now I just need to buy some more thread…

Finished: one sewing-machine-shaped, wall-hanging, wooden thread holder:

It looks much less creepy with thread actually on it – something about all those pegs sticking out just looked rather sinister. It probably didn’t help I was taking these photos in the evening, with just an overhead light and one lamp.

I have more bobbins coming from ebay soon. I don’t know how I have survived this long with only 4 – actually I do – layers and layers of different thread colors spun on top of each other. Is there a better way to do that? I guess it doesn’t much matter at this point, since I have 25 brand new ones heading my way – I don’t even have that many colors of thread! Guess it’s time to dream up some more projects that will necessitate more colors of thread to fill this thing up.

The real deal

I was going to post a picture of the current status of my thread holder project, but I went to the zoo yesterday instead of working on it… But one of the special animal events at the zoo was an up-close look at a hedgehog!! Awesome. So I got to meet Harriet‘s real life counterpart, Cousteau:

Is he not the cutest thing ever?

Work in Progress: Thread Holder

This is where we are with the sewing & saws project: cut, drilled, sanded (every single hole), and painted. It got another coat last night so it’s bright & white. Next up is to cut a dowel into 30 bits (one for each hole), paint them (maybe), and glue them in. Then fill with thread!

Sewing & Saws

I am, shall we say, an easily distracted crafter. Not in the sense that I get distracted from crafts, just distracted to other crafts. Over the past few years, I’ve collected a small assortment of spools of sewing machine thread. All of which live in a pink Easter basket from 2 years ago. None of which are neatly wrapped enough to keep them from unrolling more and more every time I so much as look at them.

Growing up, my mom had a wall-hanging thread spool holder. I wanted to make one, but I didn’t have a powered saw (and there is only so much hand-sawing I am willing to do). Fortunately, after commissioning my dad to cut me some wooden discs to use in clock making, he suggested that a scroll saw might be in order so I don’t have to outsource my crafts to Houston. Yay! This beauty has been home for about a month and has been put to good use already – two more clock faces, and a thread spool holder for my wall. Any guesses as to what shape I cut the thread holder?

Frock by (Next) Friday

Via the inspiring blog MADE, I discovered Grosgrain, another lovely blog (my favorite part is her header image with the spools of ribbon). She’s hosting a “frock by friday” sew-along this week. My week was a bit too busy to actually start and finish a dress, especially since I only found the link on Tuesday. BUT! I have the pattern printed and the fabric chosen, so hopefully my frock will be finished by next Friday. Maybe. Anyone else for a belated sew-along?

Craft Fair Recap

The craft fair was a tad… disappointing. Our table was inside, but the pouring rain on Saturday kept people at home. We were hopeful about Sunday, which was a nice and sunny day. A good number of people stopped by our booth and seemed interested, but we only sold a few things. Sigh. We did a pretty good job of keeping ourselves entertained, though, and made friends with some of the other vendors. And we called it “market research” and it did prompt a lot of good discussion about what we would do differently if we were to do it again! We also rearranged our booth several times – here’s the more or less final version:

Friendly Aardvantadillos

At the craft fair this weekend (a post about that later, perhaps), these little guys got called multiple names (and our hedgehogs also got referred to as pigs – “these are pigs, right?” “umm, not really…”).

What would you call them? Aardvarks? Ant-eaters? Armadillos? Aardvantadillos?

And why do all three of those somewhat-similar-looking animals have names that start with ‘A’??
